- Die American Association (AA) war eine US-amerikanische Major League im Baseballsport. Die American Association existierte von 1882 bis 1891. Während dieser zehn Jahre stritten sich American Association und National League um die Vorherrschaft im amerikanischen Baseball. - The American Association of Base Ball Clubs (AA) was a professional baseball league that existed for 10 seasons from 1882 to 1891. Together with the National League (NL), founded in 1876, the AA participated in an early version of the World Series seven times versus the champion of the NL in an interleague championship playoff tournament. At the end of its run, several AA franchises joined the NL. After 1891, the NL existed alone, with each season's champions being awarded the Temple Cup (1894–1897). During its existence, the AA was often simply referred to as "the Association" in the media, in contrast to the NL, which was sometimes called "the League". (en)

H. Kennett jako jedyny z ośmiu przedstawicieli tej ligi, nie dostosował się do wprowadzonych w październiku 1880 roku reguł – zakazu sprzedaży alkoholu na meczach i zakazu rozgrywania spotkań w niedziele. W pierwszym sezonie rozgrywek ligę reprezentowało sześć zespołów:

Z tego względu American Association nazywano również The Beer and Whisky League. Począwszy od 1884 do 1890 mistrz American Association grał z mistrzem National League, a mecze między tymi drużynami nosiły nazwę Championship of the United States lub World’s Championship Series. W 1884 liga liczyła osiem zespołów, zaś rok później 13. W 1884 w zespole grał , pierwszy Afroamerykanin w Major League Baseball. W drugiej połowie lat osiemdziesiątych XIX wieku kilka zespołów przeszło do mającej większą renomę National League, Alleghenys w 1887, Bridegrooms i Red Stockings w 1890. Po zakończeniu sezonu 1891 cztery kluby – Baltimore Orioles, St. Louis Browns, Louisville Colonels i – dołączyły do National League, tworząc 12-zespołową ligę o nazwie National League and the American Association of Base Ball Clubs, skróconą do National League w 1900.
