Alison Doody (born November 11, 1966 in Dublin, Ireland) is an Irish actress and model. She is a former pupil of Mount Anville Convent in South Dublin. She studied the fine arts in college before veering towards a modelling career. She was very popular as a model in Europe, but was snubbed by American agencies, who thought she was too short. She also appeared in several commercials, before an agent noticed her work and suggested that she try acting, instead.
She is probably best known for her portrayal of Dr. Elsa Schneider in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Jenny Flex in the James Bond film A View to a Kill. She is also a familiar face to British TV fans.
In 1994 she retired from the screen and left Hollywood after her last film Major League II, to focus on marriage and motherhood. Her husband (up until 2005) was Gavin O'Reilly, CEO of the Independent News & Media of Ireland. They have two children (born 1996 and 1999). Alison lives in Dalkey, a suburb of Dublin, also known as "Hollywood-in-Ireland," because of the number of celebrities living there.
Doody declined an offer from director Peter Jackson to appear as sword-wielding Éowyn in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. The 18-month on-set commitment of the shoot caused her to decline the part. She was a new mother at the time.
In 2002, she returned to acting with a small role in the British comedy movie The Actors (2003) with Sir Michael Caine, in which she played herself in an award ceremony scene. The part made her realize how much she missed the business.
Alison Doody also played alongside Patrick Swayze in the television movie adaptation of King Solomon's Mines.
More recently, Alison has appeared in a short movie called Benjamin's Struggle (2005), a pamphlet about the Holocaust, and in the British TV series Waking the Dead (in a two-part episode called "The Fall") in 2007.
