Alèxandros Koumoundoùros was born in Kampos of Avia located in the Messenian side of the Mani Peninsula. He was the son of Spirìdonas-Galànis Koumoundoùros who was the Bey of the area during the last period of the administration of the region by the Ottoman Empire.He was a political personality famous for his work towards national progress, his patriotism and unselfishness, despite his having been in office during a very unsettled period of Greek history.

Fils de Spiridonas-Galanis Koumoundouros, dernier bey durant l’occupation turque. Il étudia le droit à Athènes. Durant les 50 ans de vie publique il mena une politique de neutralité entre les 3 puissances de l’époque . Il fut Premier Ministre de la Grèce à 10 reprises. Son plus grand succès fut lors de son dernier mandat le rattachement des régions de Thessalie et de Arta à la Grèce, le 31 mars 1881. Le 26 février 1883, il meurt à Athènes où il fut enterré aux frais de l’État. С 1850 г. депутат парламента, в котором скоро выделился своим ораторским талантом. В 1855 был избран президентом палаты, затем несколько раз был министром финансов. После революции 1862 г., в которой он принял активное участие, Кумундурос стал членом первого революционного министерства и в течение последующих лет занимал посты министра юстиции, министра по делам религии и образования, министра внутренних дел. 14 марта 1865 г. впервые возглавил правительство, затем занимал пост премьер-министра Греции ещё 8 раз . Особенно выделялся он как талантливый финансист, что, впрочем, не мешало греческим финансам ухудшаться с каждым годом.
