- Alexandre de Villadei (o Alexandre de Villedieu, Alexander de Villa Dei, Alexandre de Dol o Alexander Dolensis) (Villedieu-les-Poêles, Normandia, 1160-1170? - ?, 1240-1250?), fou un escriptor, pedagog, gramàtic i matemàtic normand. Sembla que era de l'orde dels franciscans. Estudià, de jove, a París. Ensenyà a Dol-de-Bretagne. Fou canonge a Avranches a la Normandia. És l'autor del Doctrinal o Doctrinale puerorum, un tractat gramatical llatí en vers que tingué una gran difusió i repercussió, durant total la Baixa edat mitjana fins al Renaixement, en les universitat i centres educatius d'arreu d'Europa. Aquest tractat,completat vers el 1209, era format per 2645 versos hexàmetres i desplaçà a textos gramaticals fins llavors molt emprats com l'Ars Minor de Donato (s. IV) o les Institutiones grammaticae de Prisciano (s.VI). Fou objecte de adaptacions i revisions que afavoriren el seu ús durant gairebé tres segles. Fou durament criticat per l'Humanisme. que veié en el tractat d'Alexandre de Villadei el més significat exemple dels pitjors plantejaments didàctics de l'ensenyament escolàstic. Fou l'autor igualment, entre altres obres, d'un tractat d'aritmètica, també en vers, denominat Carmen de algorismo, que assolí igualment una gran difusió. (ca)
- Alexander of Villedieu was a French author, teacher and poet, who wrote text books on Latin grammar and arithmetic, everything in verse. He was born around 1175 in Villedieu-les-Poêles in Normandy, studied in Paris, and later taught at Dol in Brittany. His greatest fame stems from his versified Latin grammar book, the Doctrinale Puerorum. He died in 1240, or perhaps in 1250. He was a Franciscan and a Master of the University of Paris. His Doctrinale puerorum, a versified grammar, soon became a classic. It was composed around 1200, and was all written in leonine hexameters. Even after several centuries, with the advent of printing, it appeared in countless editions in Italy, Germany and France. It was based on the older works of Donatus and Priscian. Alexander also wrote a short tract on arithmetic called Carmen de Algorismo—the Poem about Arithmetic, which also achieved a wide distribution. A typical line from his Carmen de Algorismo, runs like this: Extrahe radicem semper sub parte sinistra Wherein he instructs his students: "always extract the square root by starting from the left". The poem is not very long, only a few hundred lines, and summarizes the art of calculating with the new style of Indian dice, or Talibus Indorum, as he calls the new Hindu-Arabic numerals. (en)

Se supone que perteneció a la orden franciscana, y estudió en la Universidad de París, con Rodolfo e Yson. Entró al servicio del obispo de Dol, donde enseñó (Dol de Bretagne, razón por la cual se le llamó Dolensis); y posteriormente fue profesor en París, donde fue colega de Johannes de Sacrobosco. Su obra más difundida fue el o (1209), un tratado de gramática latina en versos hexámetros que se utilizó en las escuelas de latinidad de toda Europa occidental hasta el Renacimiento. Fue también autor de un tratado de aritmética, también en verso y muy difundido: , donde describe las operaciones según la nueva numeración de posición decimal.
