El 22 de diciembre de 1997 tuvo lugar en Esta comunidad el asesinato de 45 indígenas tzotziles simpatizantes del Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional por paramilitares, evento conocido comúnmente como la Matanza de Acteal.
