- The 2001–02 season was Stoke City's 95th season in the Football League and the eighth in the third tier. After two failed attempts to gain promotion via the play-offs the pressure was now on Gudjon Thordarson to achieve automatic promotion. Graham Kavanagh was sold for £1 million as well as fan favourite Peter Thorne to Cardiff City and with the money raised Stoke went out and brought some useful additions. After a slow start City went on a 10 match unbeaten run which was brought to a halt by Wigan in November. In January Stoke lost their form and fell away from automatic promotion places and it became clear that it would be the play-offs again for Stoke. And it was Cardiff who were Stoke's opponents with the first leg ending in a 2–1 win for the "Bluebirds" and it seemed that in the second leg Cardiff would hold on for a goalless draw but two very late goals gave Stoke a famous victory and they went to secure promotion by beating Brentford 2–0 in the final. It was not enough however for Gudjon Thordarson to be offered a new contract. (en)
- De Engelse voetbalclub Stoke City FC kwam in het seizoen 2001–2002 voor de 94ste keer uit in het Engelse profvoetbal. Het was het achtste seizoen dat de club uit Stoke-on-Trent in de Football League Second Division speelde, inmiddels de derde divisie van het Engelse profvoetbal sinds de introductie (seizoen 1992–1993) van de Premier League. Na de vijfde plaats in het voorafgaande seizoen eindigden The Potters opnieuw op de vijfde plaats in de eindrangschikking van de op twee na hoogste divisie. De club stond onder leiding van de IJslander , wiens komst vooral het gevolg was van het feit dat de club in het najaar van 1999 was overgenomen door een IJslandse investeringsmaatschappij. Een van de nieuwkomers dit seizoen bij Stoke was de Nederlandse aanvaller Peter Hoekstra, die werd overgenomen van Ajax Amsterdam. Het voorgaande seizoen kwam hij op huurbasis uit voor FC Groningen. De club deed opnieuw lange tijd mee in de subtop en wist zich dankzij de vijfde plaats uiteindelijk te plaatsen voor de play-offs voor promotie. Daarin won Stoke over twee duels van Cardiff City. In de finale, gespeeld op 11 mei 2002, won de ploeg vervolgens met 2-0 van Brentford door treffers van en (eigen doelpunt), waardoor promotie naar de Football League First Division een feit was. Desondanks werd coach Þórðarson vier dagen later de laan uitgestuurd. Hij werd vervangen door . werd aan het einde van het seizoen uitgeroepen tot Player of the Season. (nl)
