- Els 400 metres femenins al Campionat del Món d'atletisme de 1983 van tenir lloc a l'estadi Olímpic de Hèlsinki del 7 al 10 d'agost. 35 atletes van participar en les proves. La txecoslovaca va guanyar la medalla d'or i va batre el rècord del món. - These are the official results of the Women's 400 metres event at the 1983 IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. There were a total number of 35 participating athletes, with five qualifying heats and the final held on Wednesday 10 August 1983. Jarmila Kratochvílová in lane 3 spent much of the race chasing Mariya Kulchunova-Pinigina to her outside, while Taťána Kocembová quickly made up the stagger on Rosalyn Bryant between the two Czech teammates. Kratochvílová finally made up the stagger on Pinigina in the middle of the final turn and came onto the home stretch barely two metres up on the Soviet and a metre up on her teammate. She widened that to four metres by the finish and Kocembová opened up a similar gap on Pinigina. Each of the top four competitors in this race set their lifetime best, Kratochvílová only being beaten once with 1985's still standing world record 47.60 by Marita Koch. In addition to Kratochvílová remaining the #2 performer in history, Kocembová is #5, Pinigina is #15. Almost forgotten is #56 Gaby Bußmann, still under 50 seconds. (en)
- Der 400-Meter-Lauf der Frauen bei den Leichtathletik-Weltmeisterschaften 1983 fand am 7., 8., 9. und 10. August 1983 in Helsinki, Finnland, statt. 33 Athletinnen aus 25 Ländern nahmen an dem Wettbewerb teil. Die Läuferinnen aus der Tschechoslowakei errangen einen Doppelsieg. Die Goldmedaille gewann die Olympiazweite von 1980 und Vizeeuropameisterin von 1982 Jarmila Kratochvílová nach 47,99 s, womit sie einen neuen Weltrekord aufstellte. Am Tag zuvor war sie bereits Weltmeisterin über 800 Meter geworden. Silber ging mit 48,59 s an die EM-Dritte von 1982 Taťána Kocembová. Am Schlusstag sicherten sich die beiden siegreichen Tschechinnen zusammen mit der 4-mal-400-Meter-Staffel ihres Landes die Silbermedaille. Die sowjetische Athletin Marija Pinigina, frühere Marija Kultschunowa, kam mit 49,19 s auf den dritten Platz und errang mit der 4-mal-400-Meter-Staffel der UdSSR später eine zweite Bronzemedaille.
