- Die AFL-Saison 1961 war die zweite Saison der American Football League. In dieser Saison zogen die Los Angeles Chargers nach San Diego. Diese dominierten dank einer starken Passverteidigung, welche in den vierzehn Regular-Season-Spielen 49 Interceptions und sechs weitere in den Play-offs fing, die Liga und beendeten die Regular Season nach den ersten elf siegreichen Spielen mit zwölf Siegen und zwei Niederlagen, womit sie ihre Division gewannen. Im trafen sie auf die Houston Oilers, welche in dieser Saison mehrere Offensivrekorde aufstellten. Dieses durch dreizehn Turnover geprägte Spiel gewannen die Oilers mit 10:3. In dieser Saison kam es auch zum umstrittenen Sieg der Boston Patriots gegen die Dallas Texans vom 3. November 1961. Beim finalen Spielzug von der 1-Yard-Linie lief beim Stand von 21:28 für die Patriots ein Patriots-Fan auf das Spielfeld und den Pass von Texans-Quarterback abwehrte. (de)
- The 1961 American Football League season was the second regular season of the AFL. It consisted of 8 franchises split into two divisions: the East Division (Buffalo Bills, Houston Oilers, Titans of New York, Boston Patriots) and the West Division (San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, Dallas Texans, Oakland Raiders). After having spent its inaugural season in Los Angeles, the Chargers moved to San Diego, California for this AFL season; 56 years later, the franchise returned to their original home. The season ended when the Houston Oilers defeated the San Diego Chargers in the AFL Championship game. (en)
