Il nucleo creativo dei Trail of Dead è composto da Conrad Keely e Jason Reece che si alternano fra batteria, chitarra e voce, sia su disco che dal vivo.
Conrad e Jason si incontrano alle Hawaii nel 1993, ma il progetto prende il largo solo dopo qualche anno a Austin, nel Texas, quando Neil Busch e Kevin Allen si aggiungono alla formazione.
Nel 1998 viene pubblicato il primo disco omonimo, nel 1999 Madonna. Dopo il passaggio alla Interscope esce Source Tags & Codes (2002), il loro album più noto.
Adesso la band viene affiancata a nomi importanti quali Sonic Youth e My Bloody Valentine. A fare da preludio all'uscita dell'album successivo è The Secret of Elena's Tomb, un EP di cinque tracce che è da intendersi come un passaggio al rock più maturo. Passaggio che sarà confermato da Worlds Apart nel 2005, dove si intravedono venature meno shoegaze e noise dando spazio a un songwriting d'impatto più epico à la Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness degli Smashing Pumpkins.
