Donald Runnicles is a Scottish conductor, the son of a choirmaster and organist. He began his education at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh, moving later to George Watson's College which offered a specialised music education facility, followed by the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge. He worked for a year at the London Opera Centre. Runnicles began his operatic career as a singers' coach and assistant conductor in Mannheim, Germany.

Todestag. Seit 1993 ist er regelmäßiger Gast des Edinburgh Festival. Er dirigierte u.a. das BBC Symphony Orchestra, das NDR Sinfonieorchester, das Israel Symphonic, die Münchner und die Wiener Philharmoniker sowie das Concertgebouw Orchestra. Er dirigierte bei den Bayreuther Festspielen, den Proms in London und den Salzburger Festspielen, wo er u.a. Erich Wolfgang Korngolds Die tote Stadt aufführte. An der Wiener Staatsoper dirigierte er mehrere Jahre lang Wagners Ring des Nibelungen und 2001 die Wiener Erstaufführung von Brittens Billy Budd. Weiterhin ist Runnicles Erster Gastdirigent des Atlanta Symphony Orchestra und seit 2006 Musikdirektor des Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming. von 2001 bis 2006 war er Erster Dirigent des New Yorker Orchestra of St. Luke's. 2004 wurde Runnicles mit dem Order of the British Empire ausgezeichnet. Seit 2009 ist er als Generalmusikdirektor der Deutschen Oper in Berlin und Chefdirigent des BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra verpflichtet.

From 2001 to 2007, he was also Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of St. Luke's. He became Music Director of the Grand Teton Music Festival in September 2005, having been appointed that August. His current Grand Teton contract is through 2011. In October 2007, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBC SSO) announced the appointment of Runnicles as their next Chief Conductor in September 2009, for an initial contract of 3 years. The BBC SSO appointment marks Runnicles' first principal post with a British orchestra. Later the same month, the Deutsche Oper Berlin announced the appointment of Runnicles as their next Generalmusikdirektor, effective August 2009, for an initial contract of 5 years.
