- Verticillium és un gènere de fongs dins la divisió Ascomycota, i és una forma anamòrfica de la família . Aquest gènere inclou diversos grups de sapròtrofs i paràsits de plantes superiors i també paràsits d'insectes, nematodes, ous de mol·luscs i d'altres fongs. Actualment es considera que el gènere Verticillium conté 51 espècies, que es poden dividir en tres grups ecològics 1) micopatògens (patògens de fongs) 2) entomopaògens (patògens d'insectes, Zare i Gams, 2001) i 3) patògens de les plantes i saprotrofs relacionats (Barbara and Clewes, 2003). Tanmateix, recentment el gènere ha experimentat algunes revisions i la majoria dels entomopatògens i micopatògens aïllats cauen dins un nou grup anomenat Lecanicillium. El gènere Verticillium ara inclou les espècies patògenes de les plantes Verticillium dahliae, V. albo-atrum, V. nubilium, i V. tricorpus. Les espècies més ben conegudes de Verticillium són, V. dahliae i V. albo-atrum que causen la Verticil·liosi en més de 400 espècies de plantes eudicotiledònies. (ca)
