- Thomas Beddoes (* 13. April 1760 in Shifnal, Shropshire; † 24. Dezember 1808 in bei Bristol) war ein englischer Arzt und Autor wissenschaftlicher Werke. Er galt als ein fortschrittlicher Praktiker und Lehrer der Medizin und war mit bedeutenden Gelehrten seiner Zeit bekannt. Beddoes war ein Freund von Samuel Taylor Coleridge und hatte laut E. S. Shaffer einen bedeutenden Einfluss auf das Denken von Coleridge, indem er ihn mit der historisch-kritischen Methode bekannt machte. Der Dichter Thomas Lovell Beddoes war sein Sohn. In der National Portrait Gallery in London gibt es von ihm ein Gemälde des Malers Samson Towgood Roch. In dem von ihm geleiteten „pneumatischen Institut“ in Bristol wurden Erkrankungen der Atemwege durch Inhalation bestimmter Gase behandelt. (de)

Professeur de médecine, il s'associa à d'autres scientifiques pour promouvoir l'usage des gaz comprimés, et espérait notamment en tirer un traitement de la tuberculose. Beddoes était aussi un ami de Coleridge et, selon E. S. Shaffer, il exerça sur ce poète une forte influence en lui faisant connaître la critique textuelle. Il eut pour fils le poète Thomas Lovell Beddoes. Le portrait que Samson Towgood Roch a fait de lui est exposé à la National Portrait Gallery, à Londres. (fr)

He was born in Shifnal, Shropshire and died in Bristol fifteen years after opening his medical practice there. He was a reforming practitioner and teacher of medicine, and an associate of leading scientific figures. He worked to treat tuberculosis. Beddoes was a friend of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and, according to E. S. Shaffer, an important influence on Coleridge's early thinking, introducing him to the higher criticism. The poet Thomas Lovell Beddoes was his son. A painting of him by Samson Towgood Roch is in the National Portrait Gallery, London. (en)
