Le film est inspiré de la vie de Yang Kwei-Fei, concubine favorite de l'empereur Ming Huang (712-756) de la dynastie Tang, dont Kenji Mizoguchi avait tiré le film L'Impératrice Yang Kwei-Fei en 1955.
