- Die HMS Alliance (Schiffskennung P417, später S67) ist ein U-Boot der Royal Navy das zur Amphion-Klasse gehört, die auch als A-Klasse oder als Acheron-Klasse bezeichnet wird. Die U-Boote der Amphion-Klasse wurden für den Einsatz in Fernost entwickelt, wo die Größe des Pazifischen Ozeans große Reichweite, hohe Oberflächengeschwindigkeit und relativen Komfort für die Besatzung zu wichtigen Merkmalen machte, um viel größere Patrouillenbereiche und längere Zeiträume auf See zu ermöglichen, als es die britischen U-Boote, die im Atlantik oder im Mittelmeer stationiert waren, nötig hatten. Die Alliance war eines der sieben A-Klasse-Boote, die mit einem Schnorchel ausgestattet waren – diese wurden bis 1949 angebracht. Sie wurde am 13. März 1945 in der Werft von Vickers-Armstrong in Barrow-in-Furness, der einzigen U-Boot-Werft Großbritanniens, auf Kiel gelegt, lief – wie die baugleiche Aurochs – am 28. Juli 1945 vom Stapel und wurde am 13. Mai 1947 fertiggestellt. Wie bei allen Booten der Amphion-Klasse beginnt ihr Name mit dem Buchstaben A. Das U-Boot ist das einzige erhaltene Exemplar der Klasse und seit 1981 Museumsschiff. (de)

The Amphion-class submarines were designed for use in the Far East, where the size of the Pacific Ocean made long-range, high surface speed and relative comfort for the crew important features to allow for much larger patrol areas and longer periods at sea than British submarines operating in the Atlantic or Mediterranean had to contend with. Aan de bouw werd aan het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog begonnen om in 1947 de Britse vloot te vervoegen. HMS Alliance is een duikboot van de Amphionklasse, ontworpen voor dienst in het Verre Oosten. Hij beschikt over een grote actieradius (10.000 zeemijlen), hoge oppervlaktesnelheid en een relatief hoog comfort voor een zestigtal bemanningsleden. Tussel 1958 en 1960 werd HMS Alliance gemoderniseerd. Het kanon op het dek en de externe torpedobuizen werden ontmanteld terwijl een gestroomlijnde bovenbouw uit aluminium de onderzeeboot geruislozer maakte en de snelheid onderwater toenam. HMS Alliance moest noodgedwongen uit dienst worden genomen na een ontploffing van batterijen in 1971 bij Isle of Portland. Vanaf 1973 fungeerde de duikboot als trainingsschip en na versterking van haar kiel werd ze in 1981 uit het water gehesen en in Gosport tentoongesteld. In 2011 werd 3,4 miljoen pond ter beschikking gesteld om de HMS Alliance te restaureren. Op 3 april 2014 is de onderzeeboot voor het publiek geopend. (nl)
