- Fort Abercrombie ist der erste permanente Militärposten im damaligen Dakota-Territorium (USA) und war auch als Gateway to the Dakotas (Tor zu den Dakotas) bekannt. Er wurde am 28. August 1858 durch Lieutenant Colonel John Joseph Abercrombie gegründet und nach ihm benannt. Seit der Aufteilung des Dakota-Territoriums in die beiden US-Bundesstaaten North und South Dakota am 2. November 1889 befindet sich das Fort in North Dakota, am Grenzfluss zu Minnesota, dem Red River of the North. Die Aufgabe der Fort-Besatzung war der Schutz der durchziehenden Wagentrecks auf den Red River Trails und der Dampfschiffe auf dem Red River. Außerdem wurden im Fort Waren für die Trecks deponiert. The act allocated twenty-five square miles of land on the Red River of the North in Dakota Territory to be used for a military outpost, but the exact location was left to the discretion of Lieutenant Colonel John J. Abercrombie. The fort was constructed in the year 1858. It was the first permanent military settlement in what became North Dakota, and is thus known as "The Gateway to the Dakotas". (en)

Fue creado para proteger a los colonos asentados en el valle del río Rojo de los ataques provenientes de los Siux, cumpliendo un importante papel en la apertura del Territorio Dakota para su colonización. Fue dos veces asediado sin éxito por los Siux en 1862. Con la firma de un tratado entre los extranjeros, los Chippewa y los Siux en 1870, el temor de los amerindios decayó y el fuerte fue abandonado en 1877. Parte de las antiguas instalaciones son ahora un Parque nacional. (es)
