Exodus is a 1977 album by Jamaican reggae band Bob Marley and the Wailers, first released in June 1977 through Island Records, following Rastaman Vibration (1976). Die Auswahl der Songs sowie deren Reihenfolge auf beiden Platten überließ Marley seinem Koproduzenten Blackwell. „Unsere Arbeitsteilung bestand darin, dass er die Tracks aufnahm und ich sie mischte. Ebenso wählte ich eine Titelfolge für das Album. Die Songs, die zu Exodus und seinem Nachfolger Kaya wurden, waren zur selben Zeit aufgenommen worden. Bob übergab sie mir, und ich teilte sie auf zwei Alben auf. Wir haben kaum über Abmischung oder Abfolge der Songs gesprochen. Die Songs Jamming, Waiting in Vain, Three Little Birds und One Love / People Get Ready waren allesamt ebenso wie der Titeltrack Exodus weltweite Erfolge und gelten heute als moderne Klassiker. Das Album erreichte in den Billboard-Popalbumcharts Platz 20, und Platz 15 in den Blackalbumcharts. Das Entstehungsjahr 1977 bedeutete auch den Durchbruch von Punk und New Wave in England. Bei den Punks der ersten Generation war Reggae sehr beliebt, da er als ursprünglich und unverfälscht galt. Bob Marley und der jamaikanische Dub-Musiker Lee „Scratch“ Perry griffen den Trend auf und produzierten im Juli 1977 in London den griffigen Titel Punky Reggae Party. On 3 December 1976, an assassination attempt was made on Bob Marley's life in which his chest was grazed and his arm was struck with a bullet, but he survived. Following the assassination attempt, Marley left Jamaica and was exiled to London, where Exodus was recorded. The album was a success both critically and commercially; it received gold certifications in the US, UK and Canada, and was the album that propelled Marley to international stardom. In 2017, Exodus was remastered and re-released for its 40th anniversary. There are more tracks from Exodus on Marley’s greatest hits compilation Legend than from any of his other records. Il cantante si era trasferito a Londra dopo essere scampato ad un tentato omicidio avvenuto il 5 dicembre 1976, mentre si trovava nella sua abitazione di Kingston, in Giamaica. Il titolo quindi ha un doppio significato in quanto si riferisce sia all'esodo del popolo eletto che alla sua posizione politica contro il Primo Ministro Michael Manley: allo slogan elettorale di quest'ultimo "We know where we are going", Marley rispose componendo Exodus.
