The war between the Argentine Confederation and the state of Buenos Aires was a conflict of the Argentine Civil War. It began with the secession of Buenos Aires from Argentina, and lasted from 1852 to 1862. With the military victory of Buenos Aires at the battle of Pavón, the country was unified again.

Pero la división en partidos que había dominado el período anterior seguía presente, y los partidos que habían ayudado en la victoria esperaban dirigir el proceso: los federales se apoyaban en el prestigio y el poder militar y económico del vencedor, general Justo José de Urquiza, para sancionar una constitución enteramente federal. Por su lado, los unitarios y muchos de los dirigentes de Buenos Aires querían una constitución unitaria, o al menos que consagrara el predominio de esa provincia. Urquiza se adelantó y, por medio del Acuerdo de San Nicolás, invitó a las provincias a la formación de un Congreso Constituyente en Santa Fe, que terminaría sancionando la Constitución Argentina de 1853.
