Es existierte von Ende 1943 bis Ende 1946. Das Hauptquartier befand sich ab April 1944 in Kandy in Ceylon. Oberbefehlshaber war Admiral Lord Mountbatten. Sein Stellvertreter war der US-General Joseph Stilwell, Leiter des amerikanischen China Burma India Theater, der zugleich stellvertretender Befehlshaber in China war. En août 1943, les Alliés créent un « Commandement combiné sud-est asiatique » pour reprendre les responsabilités stratégiques du commandement des Indes Britanniques et celle des différents commandements nationaux de la région.
