Ostwestfalen-Lippe wird im Osten durch das Weserbergland und im Süden durch das Westhessische Bergland begrenzt. Im Westen haben die Kreise Paderborn und Gütersloh Anteil an der Westfälischen Bucht und der Paderborner Hochfläche mit der Senne. Nördlich reicht die Region vom Ravensberger Hügelland über das Wiehengebirge bis in die Norddeutschen Tiefebene hinein. Die polyzentrische Siedlungsstruktur in Ostwestfalen-Lippe weist zwei Oberzentren auf und wird überwiegend von mehreren mittelgroßen Städten geprägt. Aufgrund dieser Struktur liegt die Bevölkerungsdichte trotz des eher ländlichen Charakters der Region verhältnismäßig hoch. Dies trifft insbesondere auf die zentral liegenden Gebiete im Ravensberger Hügelland zu. Die Region beherbergt (Stand 2019) drei Großstädte, Bielefeld mit ca. 334.000, Paderborn mit ca. 151.000 und Gütersloh mit ca. 101.000 Einwohnern.Kulturell und im Selbstverständnis der Bewohner wirken noch oft die historischen politischen und konfessionellen Grenzen in der Region fort, so dass die Region in das lutherische Minden-Ravensberg im Norden, das überwiegend katholische Hochstift Paderborn und das evangelisch-reformierte Lipperland im Osten unterteilt werden kann. Some major globally operating companies are headquartered in the region, for example Bertelsmann, Miele, Dr. Oetker, Melitta, Gerry Weber, DMG Mori Aktiengesellschaft, Hörmann, , Wincor Nixdorf, Phoenix Contact, HEGLA and Claas. In 2012 OWL became Germans BMBF Leading Edge Technology Cluster for intelligent Technical Systems (it's OWL ), which is currently the largest public funded project in the context of the government initiative "Industry 4.0". Universities are located in Bielefeld, Paderborn and Lemgo. The Fraunhofer Society is engaged in OWL in Lemgo and Paderborn. The Teutoburg Forest stretches across the region. It is the supposed site of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9 AD, where an alliance of Germanic tribes defeated a Roman army. In 1875, a statue was unveiled of the commander Arminius, who led the Germanics to victory at the battle. This statue, the Hermannsdenkmal, is one of the best-known sights in Ostwestfalen-Lippe. (en)
