Mai 1981 in Obernai Département Bas-Rhin) war ein französischer Geologe, Paläontologe und Hochschullehrer für Geologie an der Universität des Saarlandes und an der Universität der Franche-Comté in Besançon. Er war auch ein Spezialist der geologischen Geschichte des gesamten Beckens des Mittelrheins und der Mosel. Er fand Beweise für tektonische quaternäre Erdbewegungen, hauptsächlich im Rheingraben. - Nicolas Théobald, born in Montenach (Moselle) on August 31, 1903 and died in Obernai (Bas-Rhin) on May 10, 1981, was a lorrain and French geologist, paleontologist and professor of geology at university of Besançon. He was also a specialist in the geological history of the entire Middle Rhine and Moselle basin. He insisted on the evidence of quaternary tectonic movements mainly in the Rhine trench. (en)

Il est surtout connu pour l'orientation nouvelle de sa thèse d'État sur Les Insectes fossiles des Terrains oligocènes de France (1937). Il a découvert plusieurs genres et plus de 300 espèces d'insectes ; toutefois, ces fossiles étant souvent très proches des espèces actuelles, ce n'est pas leur valeur stratigraphique qui est mise en avant, mais leur signification biogéographique, permettant de déterminer les caractères climatiques et environnementaux de leurs milieux de vie et de décrire les paysages de la « France » oligocène.
