In 2012, while fighting extradition to Sweden for questioning over sex assault claims, Julian Assange applied for and was granted political asylum by Ecuador and he remained in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London from 2012 until 2019. On 11 April 2019, his asylum was revoked and he was carried out of the Embassy and arrested by the London Metropolitan Police for failing to appear in court. Following his arrest, a US indictment from 2018 was made public accusing Assange of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion related to his involvement with Chelsea Manning and WikiLeaks. The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years with a possibility of parole.
