Hugo werd in 818 door Lodewijk de Vrome, zijn halfbroer, gedwongen in het klooster in te treden. Hij werd monnik in Charroux (818), abt van Saint-Quentin (822-823), abt van Lobbes, abt van Saint-Bertin (836), abt van . Hij was ook aartskanselier van Lodewijk de Vrome (834-840). Hug va ser abat de diverses abadies: Basílica de Sant Quintí (822 - 823) a la ciutat de Saint-Quentin, a la ciutat de Lobbes (836), a la ciutat de Saint-Omer (836). - Hugh or Hugo (802–844) was the illegitimate son of Charlemagne and his concubine Regina, with whom he had one other son: Bishop Drogo of Metz (801–855). Along with Drogo and his illegitimate half-brother , Hugh was tonsured and sent from the palace of Aachen to a monastery in 818 by his father's successor, Louis the Pious, following the revolt of King Bernard of Italy. Hugh rose to become abbot of several abbacies: Saint-Quentin (822/23), Lobbes (836), and Saint-Bertin (836). In 834, he was made imperial archchancellor by his half-brother. (en)

Hugues fut abbé de nombreuses abbayes : Mont Saint-Quentin (822-823), Lobbes (836), Saint-Bertin (836) et Saint-Quentin (836-844). Selon des auteurs du XIXe siècle, il fut nommé abbé de l'abbaye du Mont-Saint-Quentin par le roi Louis Le Débonnaire ou Louis le Pieux, son demi-frère, en même temps qu'il reçut de nombreux biens du roi, cette nomination et ces dons ayant pour objectif d'éviter toute prétention d'Hugues au trône.
