- Transsylvania Phoenix (també coneguda com a Phoenix a Romania) és una formada l'any 1962 a Timișoara pels guitarristes Nicu Covaci i Kamocsa Béla. El guitarrista Claudiu Rotaru, el vocalista Florin "Moni" Bordeianu i el bateria Ioan "Pilu" Ștefanovici van completar la formació inicial. El grup es va fer famós a Romania a la dècada de 1970 quan va començar a fusionar el seu so rock and roll dels anys 60 amb la música folk tradicional, i així va ser pioner en el subgènere "etno rock". Després de guanyar popularitat a Romania durant l'anomenada a mitjans dels anys 60, Phoenix se'ls va prohibir actuar i gravar l'any 1970 quan, en el seu últim concert com a membre del grup abans d'emigrar als Estats Units, el vocalista Florin "Moni" Bordeianu. Va fer observacions despectives sobre el règim de Nicolae Ceaușescu i la seva aproximació a la música occidental. El grup esdevindria encara més conegut entre els romanesos el 1977 quan van fugir il·legalment a Alemanya Occidental, exposant-se a riscos com ser arrestats per la Securitate de Ceaușescu. The group became famous in Romania in the 1970s when it started fusing their 1960s rock and roll sound with traditional folk music, thus pioneering the "ethno rock" subgenre. After gaining popularity in Romania during the so-called British invasion in the mid-60s, the group changed its style to integrate Romanian folklore elements after vocalist Florin "Moni" Bordeianu emigrated to the United States. A new LP was released in 1972 and the band represented Romania in various Eastern Bloc music festivals throughout the 1970s. The group disbanded in 1977, when they illegally fled to West Germany. Latter attempts to regroup the members, both in West Germany and in Romania after 1990, failed to achieve the original success. They have been estimated to have sold over 2 million albums in Romania. - Phoenix (na Zachodzie znany również jako Transsylvania Phoenix) – rumuński zespół muzyczny, który założyło w 1962 roku w Timișoarze dwóch gitarzystów Nicolae Covaci i Béla Kamocsa. Początkowo byli pod „wyraźnym wpływem” brytyjskich grup: The Shadows, The Tornados, The Ventures i The Beatles. Pierwsza piosenka zespołu została nagrana w 1965 roku - Știu că mă iubești și tu. Dało to możliwość nagrań płytowych, występów w radiu i telewizji, a także na festiwalach. W 1972 roku ukazał się pierwszy album grupy - Cei ce ne-au dat nume (Ci, którzy dali nam imię), będący studyjnym zapisem muzyki do folk-opery wystawianej w Bukareszcie w 1973 roku. Wśród wielu ludowych, bądź stylizowanych na ludowe utworów (w większości opracowanych i skomponowanych przez Covacia) znalazł się Negru vodă (Czarny książę), eksponujący rockowe brzmienie skrzypiec. Phoenix występował w 1973 roku na festiwalach piosenki w Bratysławie i Sopocie, koncertował w ZSRR, często gościł w Rumuńskiej Telewizji. W 1974 roku zespół nagrał swój drugi album Mugur de fluier. W 1975 roku - podwójny album Cantofabule - muzyczny przewodnik po wyimaginowanym zwierzyńcu nieba, gdzie można było spotkać m.in. jednorożca (Norocul inorogului), skarabeusza (Scara scărăbeului), smoka (Uciderea balaurului), syrenę (Sirena), ptaka Ro(c)ka (Pasărea Roc..k and Roll) i Feniksa (Phoenix). Teksty do wszystkich 13 utworów z płyty Cantofabule i do 9 z poprzedniej Mugur de fluier napisali dwaj rumuńscy poeci: Şerban Foarţă i Andrei Ujică. W połowie lat 70. zespół występował w składzie: Mircea Baniciu – śpiew, Nicolae Covaci – śpiew, gitary, flet, Günther Reininger – instrumenty klawiszowe, syntezatory, Josef Kappl – gitara basowa, śpiew, skrzypce, flet, Ovidiu Lipan – perkusja, instrumenty perkusyjne. W roku 1998, album reedycja z utworami z pierwszego longplaya Phoenixa Cei ce ne-au dat nume, został wydany w Polsce, przez polskie wydawnictwo muzyczne Wydawnictwo 21, a jako bonusy dołączono dwie piosenki Mamâ, mamâ i Te întreb pe tine soare z EP Meşterul Manole z 1973 roku.
