He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1989 and then subsequently three more times to 9th Lok Sabha, 10th Lok Sabha and 15th Lok Sabha in 1991, 1996 and 2001 respectively. In 2019 he was expelled from congress party on the charge of anti-party activities. Before joining Indian National Congress, he was party member of Janata Dal.
