- Spalding Gray (5. června 1941 – 11. ledna 2004) byl americký herec a spisovatel. V roce 1970 se stal členem , které vedl . Spolu s několika dalšími herci z tohoto divadla následně založil The Wooster Group. Později vystupoval také v erotických filmech. Rovněž se věnoval vlastním představením – monologům. Jeden z nich zachytil režisér Jonathan Demme ve filmu Plavba do Kambodže (1987). V červnu 2001 utrpěl vážně zranění při autonehodě během dovolené v Irsku. Dne 11. ledna 2004 byl prohlášen za nezvěstného. Oznámení o nalezení jeho tělo přišlo až v březnu toho roku. Jeho tělo bylo vytaženo dvěma muži z East River. Gray se o sebevraždu pokusil již v roce 2002. (cs)

- Spalding Gray (June 5, 1941 – January 11, 2004) was an American actor, novelist, playwright, screenwriter and performance artist. He is best known for the autobiographical monologues that he wrote and performed for the theater in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as for his film adaptations of these works, beginning in 1987. He wrote and starred in several, working with different directors. Theater critics John Willis and Ben Hodges called Gray's monologues "trenchant, personal narratives delivered on sparse, unadorned sets with a dry, WASP, quiet mania." Gray achieved renown for his monologue Swimming to Cambodia, which he adapted as a 1987 film in which he starred; it was directed by Jonathan Demme. Other of his monologues that he adapted for film were Monster in a Box (1991), directed by Nick Broomfield, and Gray's Anatomy (1996), directed by Steven Soderbergh. Gray killed himself by jumping into New York City harbor on January 11, 2004, aged 62, after struggling with depression and severe injuries following a car accident. Soderbergh made a documentary film about Gray's life, And Everything Is Going Fine (2010). An unfinished monologue and a selection from his journals were published in 2005 and 2011, respectively. Hij dankt zijn bekendheid vooral aan de autobiografische theatermonologen die hij tijdens de jaren tachtig en negentig schreef en speelde. Omstreeks 1980 trad hij verscheidene malen op in België en Nederland. Zo was hij onder meer aan het werk te zien in het in Amsterdam, in het (Antwerpen) en in het kader van het Brusselse Kaaitheaterfestival. Gray verwierf naambekendheid met zijn monoloog Swimming to Cambodia, waarvan in 1987 een filmversie werd gemaakt door Jonathan Demme. Andere op film vastgelegde onemanshows van Gray zijn onder andere Monster in a Box, geregisseerd door Nick Broomsfield, en Gray's Anatomy, geregisseerd door Steven Soderbergh. In 2004 pleegde Gray zelfmoord in New York. Soderbergh maakte in 2010 een documentaire over Gray's leven onder de titel And Everything Is Going Fine. (nl)
