- Der Psalm 142 (143 nach der Nummerierung der griechischen Septuaginta) aus dem Psalter beschreibt den Hilferuf eines Menschen, der in schwere Bedrängnis geraten ist und ist in acht Verse aufgeteilt. Der Beter klagt Gott fassungslos sein Leid und seine Not; am Ende (Vers 8b) steht die Perspektive, dass der angesprochene Gott dem Gerechten Gutes tun wird. Der Eingangsvers nennt den Psalm „[e]in Weisheitslied Davids, als er in der Höhle war. Ein Gebet“ (Ps 142,1 ). Als betreffende Höhle kommen zwei Episoden aus dem 1. Buch Samuel in Frage: die Höhle von Abdullam in 1 Sam 22,1 und eine Höhle, in der sich David vor Saul versteckte und Zuflucht beim Herrn suchte (1 Sam 24,4 ); meist wird angenommen, dass der Psalm sich (ebenso wie Ps 57,1 ) auf letztere bezieht. - Psalm 142 is the 142nd psalm of the biblical Book of Psalms in the Masoretic text and modern numbering, part of the final Davidic collection of psalms, comprising Psalms 138 to 145, which are specifically attributed to David in their opening verses. It is labelled as a maschil or contemplation. In the Latin Vulgate, it is an oratio or prayer. The text is presented as a prayer uttered by David at the time he was hiding in the Cave of Adullam (part of the David and Jonathan narrative in the Books of Samuel). Albert Barnes notes that "a prayer when he was in the cave" could mean it was a prayer which he composed while in the cave, or one which he composed at a later date, "putting into a poetic form the substance of the prayer which he breathed forth there". It is, consequently, used as a prayer in times of distress. In the slightly different numbering system used in the Greek Septuagint version of the Bible, and in the Latin Vulgate/Vulgata Clementina, this psalm is Psalm 141. (en)
