- Ein Pinch Hitter, abgekürzt PH (dt.: Einwechsel-Batter), ist im Baseball ein Reservespieler, der nicht von Anfang an in der Schlagreihenfolge eingeteilt ist, aber einen Mitspieler ersetzt, der eigentlich laut Reihenfolge als nächster Batter vorgesehen wäre. Batters can be substituted at any time while the ball is dead (not in active play); the manager may use any player who has not yet entered the game as a substitute. Unlike basketball, American football or ice hockey, and in a similar way to association football, baseball does not have a "free substitution rule" (at the professional level) and thus the replaced player is not allowed back into that game. The pinch hitter assumes the spot in the batting order of the player whom he replaces. Pinch hitters are commonly used to replace a weak hitter (often the pitcher) or to gain a platoon advantage. Jednym z najbardziej spektakularnych występów pinch hittera jest pierwszy mecz MLB z 1988 roku. Los Angeles Dodgers, mający na końcie dwa outy oraz jednego biegacza na pierwszej bazie, przegrywali w drugiej połowie ostatniej zmiany z Oakland Athletics 3-4, gdy do odbicia podszedł Kirk Gibson, pinch hitter zastępujący miotacza Alejandro Peñę. Po dwóch strike'ach i trzech ballach, Gibson odbił piłkę poza boisko, zdobywając home runa i zapewniając Los Angeles wygraną 5-4. Dodgers ostatecznie zdobyli mistrzostwo ligi, wygrywając całą serię 4-1, a dla kontuzjowanego Gibsona był to jedyny pobyt na boisku w całym finale.
