- مبادرة حوض النيل، هي اتفاقية تضم مصر، السودان، أوغندا، إثيوبيا، الكونغو الديمقراطية، بوروندي، تنزانيا، رواندا، كنيا، اريتريا. وفي فبراير 1999 تم توقيع مبادرة حوض النيل بين دول حوض النيل العشر، بهدف تدعيم أواصر التعاون الإقليمي (سوسيو- اجتماعي) بين هذه الدول. وقد تم توقيها في تنزانيا. بحسب الموقع الرسمي للمبادرة، فهي تنص علي الوصول إلي تنمية مستدامة في المجال السياسي-الاجتماعي، من خلال الاستغلال المتساوي للإمكانيات المشتركة التي يوفرها حوض نهر النيل". كانت بريطانيا وقعت نيابة عن مصر اتفاقية في عام 1929، ووقعت مصر بعدها اتفاقية عام 1959 مع دول الحوض، والتي تضمنت بند الأمن المائي، الذي يقضي بعدم السماح بإقامة مشروعات على حوض النيل إلا بعد الرجوع إلى دولتي المصب. يذكر أن محكمة العدل الدولية، التي ينوى البرلمانيون رفع الدعوى القضائية أمامها، كانت قد قضت عام 1989 بأن اتفاقيات المياه شأنها شأن اتفاقيات الحدود، ولا يجوز تعديلها.و حاليا يقوم بالاشراف علي مشاريع المبادرة كلا من وزراة الخارجية المصرية ومختلف الوزارات المصرية المعنية، وخاصة وزارة الزراعة المصرية باشراف العلاقات الزراعية الخارجية ومقرها 1ش نادي الصيد. - Die Nile Basin Initiative (engl. für Nilbeckeninitiative, kurz NBI) wurde 1999 zur regionalen Zusammenarbeit der Länder im Einzugsgebiet des Nils ins Leben gerufen. Ziel ist die gemeinschaftliche langfristige Entwicklung und das Management der Wasserressourcen des Flusses. Durch eine verstärkte Zusammenarbeit soll ein fühlbarer Vorteil für alle innerhalb des Einzugsbereichs erreicht und eine Basis für gegenseitiges Vertrauen geschaffen werden. Die NBI gliedert sich in einen Ministerrat (Nile-COM) als höchstes Gremium der NBI, welches durch den Technischen Beirat (Nile-TAC) unterstützt wird. Der Beirat setzt sich aus je zwei Offiziellen der Mitgliedsländer zusammen. Zudem existiert ein Sekretariat (Nile-SEC), welches in Entebbe, Uganda, ansässig ist. Die 10 Mitgliedsländer sind

- The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) is a partnership among the Nile riparian states that “seeks to develop the river in a cooperative manner, share substantial socioeconomic benefits, and promote regional peace and security”. The NBI began with a dialogue among the riparian states that resulted in a shared vision objective “to achieve sustainable socioeconomic development through the equitable utilization of, and benefit from, the common Nile Basin water resources." It was formally launched in February 1999 by the water ministers of nine countries that share the river: Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as well as Eritrea as an observer. From its beginning the Nile Basin Initiative has been supported by the World Bank and by other external partners. The World Bank has a mandate to support the work of the NBI, as lead development partner and as administrator of the multi-donor Nile Basin Trust Fund. One of the partners is the "Nile Basin Discourse", which describes itself as "a civil society network of organisations seeking to achieve positive influence over the development of projects and programmes under the Nile Basin Initiative". In May 2010, five upstream states signed a Cooperative Framework Agreement to seek more water from the River Nile — a move strongly opposed by Egypt and Sudan. Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania were original signatories with Burundi signing in February 2011. The DRC is also expected to sign, while Egypt and Sudan are not expected to do so. Representatives of upstream countries said they were "tired of first getting permission from Egypt before using river Nile water for any development project like irrigation", as required by a treaty signed during the colonial era between Egypt and Britain in 1929.
