- Manuel Tomás Thomson Porto Mariño (Valparaíso, Chile; 3 de noviembre de 1839-Arica, Perú; 27 de febrero de 1880) fue un marino chileno que participó en la guerra del Pacífico. Fue hijo del capitán sueco Joaquín Thomson y de Manuela Porto Mariño. Ingresó en 1851 a la escuela militar. Su primera acción de guerra fue la defensa que hizo en abril de ese mismo año al Palacio de la Moneda durante un intento de golpe de Estado. Se incorporó a la escuadra como guardiamarina y en 1865 ya era capitán de corbeta de la «Esmeralda», en el mismo escenario estaba Arturo Prat. En ese rango asistió a la captura de la «Goleta Covadonga» en Papudo el 26 de noviembre de 1865 y combatió ese mismo año en Abtao donde se destacó por sus acciones en Ancud. Terminada la guerra con España, aprendió geografía y se dedicó a las exploraciones hidrográficas al sur y norte de Chile. En 1863, presentó a la Universidad de Chile una memoria geográfica titulada El Bio-Bio y sus afluentes, que fue publicada en los anales de la universidad. (es)
- Thomas Thomson Porto Manuel Mariño (3 November 1839 – 27 February 1880) was a Chilean frigate captain of the Chilean Navy, who fought and died during the War of the Pacific. Thomson was given command of the ironclad vessel Huáscar following its capture by Chile during the Battle of Angamos. Thomson then took the ship to Arica in order to bombard and blockade the city. While at Arica, the Huáscar fought a duel with the Peruvian monitor Manco Cápac which is known as the Naval Battle of Arica. During this action Thomson was killed. The Chilean submarine Thomson (SS-20) is named after him. (en)

Il était le fils du capitaine suédois Joaquin Thomson et de Manuela Porto Mariño. Il est entré en 1851 à l’école militaire. Sa première action de guerre fut la défense qu’il fit au palais de la Monnaie lors d’une tentative de coup d'État en avril de la même année. Il rejoint l’escadre en tant qu’aspirant et, en 1865, il est déjà capitaine de corvette sur l'Esmeralda, sur le même navire où se trouvait Arturo Prat. À ce grade, il assiste à la capture de la goélette espagnole au combat de Papudo le 26 novembre 1865, et combat la même année à Abtao où il se distingue par ses actions à Ancud. Après la fin de la guerre avec l’Espagne, il a appris la géographie et s’est consacré aux explorations hydrographiques au sud et au nord du Chili. En 1863, il présente à l’université du Chili un mémoire géographique intitulé Le Rio Biobío et ses affluents, qui est publié dans les annales de l’université. (fr)
