- Brainstorm (Portuguese: Bicho de Sete Cabeças) is a 2000 drama film directed by Laís Bodanzky based on the autobiographical book Canto dos Malditos by . The film was made through a partnership between Brazilian and Italian studios and starred Rodrigo Santoro, Othon Bastos and Cassia Kiss. The film tells the story of Neto, a young man who is admitted to a psychiatric hospital after his father discovers he is a user of marijuana. There, Neto is subjected to abuse. In addition to abuse by psychiatric hospitals, the film deals with the issues of drugs and relationships between fathers and sons. Bodanzky read Carrano's book in 1996 and, impressed by the theme, assigned Luiz Bolognesi to adapt it into a film and transpose its setting from the 1970s to the 1990s. In addition to keeping the film in the present, Bodanzky chose to make it a documentary-style film to create greater impact on the viewer. Bolognesi began writing in 1997 with the freedom to make changes to the original story. The film was shot in early 2000 in São Paulo, and was edited and finalized in Italy. Brainstorm had its premiere at the Rio Film Festival in October 2000. It subsequently received several awards and nominations both domestically and internationally; among them, Best Actor at the Cartagena Film Festival, and Best Film at the Brasília Film Festival. Domestic critical response was generally favorable and focused on the acting and its themes. Brazilian Film Critics Association selected it as one of the best Brazilian films of all time, while international critics were more mixed in their response. (en)

O filme foi realizado com a parceria entre as produtoras brasileiras Buriti Filmes, Dezenove Som e Imagens Produções Ltda. e Gullane Filmes, com a participação da brasileira RioFilme e da italiana Fabrica Cinema e a distribuição da Columbia TriStar, e contou com Rodrigo Santoro, Othon Bastos e Cássia Kis Magro nos papéis principais. O filme conta a história de Neto (Rodrigo Santoro), um jovem que é internado em um hospital psiquiátrico após seu pai descobrir um cigarro de maconha em seu casaco. Lá, Neto é submetido a situações abusivas. O filme, além de abordar a questão dos abusos feitos pelos hospitais psiquiátricos, também aborda a questão das drogas e a relação entre pai e filho e as consequências geradas na estrutura da família. Bicho de Sete Cabeças foi amplamente aclamado de um modo geral, recebendo vários prêmios e indicações, dentre eles, o Prêmio Qualidade Brasil, o Grande Prêmio Cinema Brasil e o Troféu APCA de "Melhor Filme", além de ser o filme mais premiado do Festival de Brasília e do Festival do Recife. O filme abriu portas para uma nova maneira de pensar sobre as instituições psiquiátricas no Brasil, e em torno disso, foi aprovada pelo Congresso Nacional uma lei que proíbe a construção de instituições com características asilares, ou seja, as que não garantem os direitos fundamentais dos doentes mentais. Em novembro de 2015 o filme entrou na lista feita pela Associação Brasileira de Críticos de Cinema (Abraccine) dos 100 melhores filmes brasileiros de todos os tempos. (pt)
