- The Bomber Mafia were a close-knit group of American military men who believed that long-range heavy bomber aircraft in large numbers were able to win a war. The derogatory term "Bomber Mafia" was used before and after World War II by those in the military who did not share their belief, and who were frustrated by the insistence of the men that the heavy bomber should take a primary position in planning and funding. The bomber mafia succeeded in their goal to have extensive bomber fleets in the US military, but they failed in their wish to achieve pinpoint targeting precision during World War II. Instead, the bomber fleets were a major factor in the general American war effort, helping to reduce the enemy fighting power, especially in Japan where they destroyed the largest cities by shifting to area incendiary bombing tactics. After the war, the 20 years of foundational work by the bomber mafia resulted in the separation of the United States Air Force from the Army to become an independent military arm. The bomber mafia's strategic doctrine, changed by war and experience, helped shape the mission of the new Air Force and its Strategic Air Command. Many years later a related term "Fighter Mafia" described those within the Air Force that favored lightweight fighters good at dog-fighting instead of heavy missile-firing fighters. (en)

- Con l'espressione Bomber Mafia si indica un gruppo (fortemente lobbistico) di militari degli Stati Uniti di alto rango che erano convinti sostenitori della dottrina militare secondo la quale l'impiego massiccio di grandi formazioni di bombardieri strategici poteva rivelarsi decisivo per vincere una guerra. La spregiativa allusione alla mafia fu in realtà coniata, dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, da altri esponenti degli stessi ambienti militari, che però non condividevano tale punto di vista, ed in tal modo esprimevano il loro disappunto per il successo che il "partito dei bombardieri pesanti" aveva avuto nel raggiungere un ruolo dominante negli alti comandi e ottenere ingenti stanziamenti di risorse finanziarie. Al termine del secondo conflitto mondiale, in conseguenza della ventennale influenza della Bomber Mafia, fu possibile costituire una arma aerea autonoma: l'United States Air Force separata e indipendente. La dottrina militare della Bomber Mafia, affinata nel tempo dalla guerra e dall'esperienza, contribuì a forgiare le caratteristiche e le strategie della neonata aeronautica e soprattutto del suo Strategic Air Command. Ироническое прозвище «бомбардировочная мафия» использовалось как до, так и после Второй мировой войны. «Бомбардировочная мафия» добилась создания флота тяжёлых бомбардировщиков в составе ВВС США, но достичь высокой точности высотного бомбометания во время войны не удалось. Тем не менее, стратегические бомбардировки позволили заметно повлиять на действия стран оси, особенно в Японии, где с помощью ковровых бомбардировок зажигательными бомбами были разрушены многие города.
