- Vznešení Mistři (také Tajemní Mistři) jsou v mnoha nových náboženských hnutích vycházejících z teosofie chápáni jako duchovní, osvícené bytosti. V minulosti byli obyčejnými lidmi, ale později podstoupili proces duchovní přeměny. Termín „Vznešení Mistři“ (Ascended master) byl poprvé užit roku 1934 v knize Guye Ballarda Odhalená mystika, která se týká Hnutí Já jsem. (cs)
- Ascended masters in the Ascended Master Teachings of a number of movements in the theosophical tradition are held to be spiritually enlightened beings who in past incarnations were ordinary humans, but who have undergone a series of spiritual transformations originally called initiations. Both "mahatma" and "ascended master" are terms used in the Ascended Master Teachings. Ascended Master is based on the theosophical concept of the Mahatma or Masters of the Ancient Wisdom. However, Mahatmas and Ascended Masters are believed by some to differ in certain respects. According to the Ascended Master Teachings a "Master of Light", "Healer" or "Spiritual Master" is a Divine Human Being who has taken the Fifth Initiation and is thereby capable of dwelling in a 5th dimension. The teachings hold that an "ascended master" is a human being who has taken the Sixth Initiation, also referred to as Ascension, and is thereby believed to be capable of dwelling in a 6th dimension. The term "ascended master" was first used by Baird T. Spalding in 1924 in his series of books, Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East (DeVorss and Co.). Godfre Ray King (Guy Ballard) further popularized this concept of spiritual masters who had once lived on the earth in his book Unveiled Mysteries. (en)

- Mestres ascensionados (Mestres Ascensos) ou avataras (do sânscrito avatara, que significa “descida”; de avatarati, “ele desce”; de ava, “longe” + tarati “ele atravessa”) é um termo esotérico que define um grupo de seres que alcançaram grande evolução espiritual, após diversas encarnações como seres humanos. O termo surgiu no século XIX, em 1877, nas obras da esoterista russa, Helena Blavatsky: The Mahatmas, Masters of Wisdom, Elder Brothers. São chamados de mestres porque orientam espiritualmente os seres que estão em busca de evolução espiritual na Terra; e ascencionados porque já encarnaram e evoluiram hierarquicamente, afastando-se das limitações do plano terreno em direção à Luz, à ascensão espiritual. A ascensão diz respeito à busca de um Amor incondicional pela vida, numa quantificação mínima de 51% de Karma negativo, transcendido pelo Dharma; os outros 49% são equacionados em serviços de devoção à humanidade, em níveis de oitavas superiores. O trabalho dos mestres é o de despertar a consciência crística, o Cristo na consciência de cada um. O trabalho dos mestres diz respeito ainda ao auxílio na libertação da Roda das Samsaras ou do ciclo de reencarnações, no qual a humanidade estaria aprisionada. Os mestres orientam a humanidade na busca de evolução espiritual e de conscientização da necessidade dessa transcendência. Segundo a hierarquia cósmica, os mestres situam-se entre Deus e anjos. Segundo o esoterismo, a ascensão é o objetivo primordial dos seres encarnados na Terra, ao final da qual a alma já não mais precisa existir no tempo e no espaço, é um momento de confraternização com o Espírito Santo e a presença Eu Sou.
