- Sezóna 1981/1982 byla 65. sezonou NHL. Vítězem Stanley Cupu se stal tým New York Islanders. Před touto sezonou došlo k přesunu divizí, aby lépe reflektovaly geografická hlediska. Patrickova divize byla přesunuta z Campbellovy konference do konference Prince z Walesu a Norrisova divize byla přesunuta opačným směrem. Došlo také ke změně systému play off. Z každé divize do něj postoupily čtyři celky, které se nejprve střetly v rámci divizí. Semifinále divizí se hrálo na 3 vítězné zápasy, finále divizí na 4 vítězné. Vítězové divizí se poté střetli na 4 vítězná utkání ve finále konferencí. Vítězové konferencí se následně střetli ve finále Stanley Cupu. (cs)

Jennings Trophy made its debut this year as the trophy for the goaltenders from the team with the fewest goals against, thus replacing the Vezina Trophy in that qualifying criteria. The Vezina Trophy would thereafter be awarded to the goaltender adjudged to be the best at his position. Mit 212 Punkte schaffte er als erster und einziger Spieler die 200 Punkte Marke und sollte diese Marke selbst noch dreimal übertreffen. In der Vorsaison bewunderte man noch Mike Bossy der als zweiter Spieler nach Maurice Richard in der NHL Geschichte in 50 Spielen auch 50 Tore erzielte. Gretzky traf bereits in seinem 39. Spiel zum 50. Mal. Seine 92 Tore wurden bis heute nicht mehr erreicht. Die Oilers erzielten in dieser Saison 417 Treffer. Außer den Oilers, die auch in den folgenden vier Jahren die 400er Marke überbieten sollten hatte kein anderes Team jemals wieder 400 Tore geschossen. In den Playoffs wurde in dieser Saison erstmals nach Divisions getrennt gespielt und die beiden Divisionsieger trafen dann im Finale aufeinander. (de)

I Washington Capitals ospitarono l'NHL All-Star Game presso il Capital Centre il 9 febbraio 1982. I New York Islanders sconfissero i Vancouver Canucks nella finale di Stanley Cup per 4-0, conquistando il terzo titolo consecutivo nella storia della franchigia. Per ridurre i costi dei viaggi vi furono alcuni cambiamenti a livello di division: la Patrick Division lasciò la Clarence Campbell Conference scambiandosi con la Norris Division, fino ad allora inserita nella Prince of Wales Conference. Furono introdotti un nuovo calendario per la stagione regolare e un nuovo sistema dei playoff: fino alla stagione precedente ogni squadra giocava quattro volte contro tutte le avversarie, mentre nei playoff le quattro vincitrici di division erano affiancate da dodici wildcard, rendendo pressoché inutili le division. A partire dalla stagione 1981-1982 fu data maggior importanza alle division creando un sistema con cui accedevano automaticamente ai playoff le prime quattro squadre di ciascun raggruppamento, facendo in modo inoltre che alle finali di Conference giungessero solo una squadra per division. Questa fu l'ultima stagione disputata dai Colorado Rockies prima del loro trasferimento nel New Jersey dove assunsero il nome di Devils. Il centro degli Edmonton Oilers Wayne Gretzky stabilì diversi primati personali superando il traguardo di 50 reti in 50 gare di Maurice Richard e Mike Bossy in sole 39 partite; egli batté anche il primato di reti in stagione con 92, 16 in più del record di Phil Esposito, mentre a livello di assist migliorò il proprio record passando da 109 a 120, per un totale di 212 punti. Fu il primo giocatore della storia della NHL capace di totalizzare oltre 200 punti in stagione regolare. (it)

Grundserien vanns av New York Islanders på 118 poäng, före Edmonton Oilers på 111 poäng. Edmonton blev också historiska denna säsong genom att bli första lag att göra över 400 mål under grundserien.
