La lingua georgiana appartiene alla famiglia caucasica meridionale o cartvelica. Sebbene alcune delle sue caratteristiche siano simili a quelle delle lingue slave (ad esempio la presenza della categoria dell'aspetto nel sistema verbale), in linea di massima la grammatica georgiana è notevolmente diversa da quella delle lingue indoeuropee.
