The BMW M42 is a DOHC straight-four petrol engine which was produced from 1989-1996. It is BMW's first mass-production DOHC engine and was produced alongside the BMW M40 SOHC four-cylinder engine as the higher performance engine. The M42 was replaced by the BMW M44, which was introduced in 1996. Compared with the M40, the M42 features a DOHC valvetrain, a timing chain, hydraulic valve lifters and an increased 10.0:1 compression ratio. Later versions of the M42 also feature a dual length intake manifold ("DISA").

Das Kurbelgehäuse wurde unverändert vom BMW M40 übernommen, die Kurbelwelle ist geschmiedet. Bei einer Bohrung von 84 mm und einem Kolbenhub von 81 mm hat der Motor einen Hubraum von 1796 cm³. Die Nennleistung ist mit 100 kW bei 6000 min−1 angegeben. Die Motorsteuerung ist eine Bosch Motronic M 1.7. Der M42 gilt als „sportlichster“ Vierzylindermotor BMWs seit dem BMW S14 und wird auch liebevoll "poorman's M3" genannt. Eine Schwachstelle des M42-Motors ist die Zylinderkopfdichtung, die üblicherweise aufgrund einer defekten Dichtung im Steuergehäuse auf der Stirnseite des Motors undicht wird. Davon sollen alle M42-Motoren betroffen sein. (de)
