- Das World Saxophone Quartet wurde 1977 von den Jazz-Saxophonisten Hamiet Bluiett, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake und David Murray als Saxophonquartett gegründet. In der Besetzung mit zumeist zwei Alt-, einem Tenor- und einem Baritonsaxophon versuchen sie ein ähnliches Klangspektrum zu erreichen wie ein klassisches Streichquartett. Die Musiker setzen jedoch auch andere Instrumente ein und spielen – insbesondere bei späteren Produktionen – auch mit Perkussionisten (wie mit Jack DeJohnette) und teilweise auch mit Bassisten zusammen. Aus dem Quartett lösen sich während eines Auftritts auch kleinere Gruppen heraus (für Trio-, Duo- und Solostücke). Wurde anfangs nur selbstgeschriebene Kompositionen aufgeführt, entstanden später Konzeptalben, die sich beispielsweise mit dem Werk von Duke Ellington oder der Soulmusik beschäftigten. Das erste Konzert des Quartetts organisierte der Musikpädagoge und Saxophonist Kidd Jordan in New Orleans; die Formation war bereits 1978 zum ersten Mal auf Tournee in Europa, wo es zunächst auf dem Moers Festival, 1981 auf dem Jazz Festival Zürich und bis Mitte der 1980er bei allen wichtigen Festivals auftrat. Nach dem Ausstieg von Hemphill kam Arthur Blythe in das Ensemble, wurde aber später durch Eric Person, dann durch James Spaulding und durch John Purcell ersetzt. Kidd Jordan war Ehrengast des WSQ bei ihrem Konzert im Jahr 2009 auf dem Festival Banlieues Bleues in Frankreich. Für Plattenaufnahmen wurde die Quartettbesetzung mitunter um Musiker wie Ronnie Burrage (1996), Jack DeJohnette (1998), D. D. Jackson (1998), Craig Harris, Matt Garrison und Billy Bang (2003) erweitert. Das Quartet trat auch mit David Murrays M'Bizo (featuring Pinise Saul) auf. (de)

L'impostazione base del gruppo è sempre stata quella del quartetto di sassofoni: due contralti, un tenore e un baritono, anche se Bluiett utilizza regolarmente il clarinetto alto e Murray il clarinetto basso. The original members were Julius Hemphill (alto and soprano saxophone, flute), Oliver Lake (alto and soprano saxophone), Hamiet Bluiett (baritone saxophone, alto clarinet), and David Murray (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet). The first three had worked together as members of the Black Artists' Group in St. Louis, Missouri, and had appeared together on Anthony Braxton's album New York, Fall 1974. In 1991, Hemphill left the group due to illness, and was replaced by Arthur Blythe, although several saxophonists have filled his chair in the years since. Hemphill died on April 2, 1995. Beginning in the early 1980s, the quartet used Bluiett's composition "Hattie Wall" (released on W.S.Q., Live in Zurich, Dances and Ballads, Steppenwolf and Yes We Can) as a signature theme for the group. The group principally recorded and performed as a saxophone quartet, usually with a line-up of two altos, tenor, and baritone (reflecting the composition of a classical string quartet), but were also joined later in their career by drummers, bassists, and other musicians. Occasionally other saxophonists would sit in or substitute for a tour. These guests have included Sam Rivers, Tony Kofi, Steve Potts, Branford Marsalis, James Spaulding and Jorge Sylvester. Hamiet Bluiett died on October 4, 2018, after an extended illness. The ensemble had split up in 2016. (en)
