- The World Heritage Convention, formally the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, is an international treaty signed on 23 November 1972, which created the World Heritage Sites, with the primary goals of nature conservation and the preservation of cultural properties. The convention, a signed document of international agreement, guides the work of the World Heritage Committee. It was developed over a seven-year period (1965–1972). The convention defines which sites which can be considered for inscription on the World Heritage List, sets out the duties of each country's governments to identify potential sites and to protect and preserve them. Signatory countries pledge to conserve the World Heritage sites situated on their territory, and report regularly on the state of their conservation. The convention also sets out how the World Heritage Fund is to be used and managed. It was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972, and signed by the President of General Conference of UNESCO, Toru Haguiwara, and the Director-General of UNESCO, René Maheu, on 23 November 1972. - De Overeenkomst voor het Werelderfgoed of het Werelderfgoedverdrag (World Heritage Convention) dateert uit 1972. Hierin zijn de volgende zaken vastgelegd:
* welke plekken in aanmerking kunnen komen voor een plaats op de Werelderfgoedlijst;
* welke verplichtingen de ondertekenende staten aangaan op het gebied van identificeren en behouden van monumenten;
* hoe het geld uit het Werelderfgoedfonds wordt besteed;
* autoriteit, samenstelling en werking van de Commissie voor het Werelderfgoed. Met ingang van 10 juni 2010 hebben 187 staten zich aangesloten bij deze overeenkomst. (nl)

Convention concernant la protection du patrimoine mondial, culturel et naturel, hiszp. Convención sobre la Protección del Patrimonio Mundial Cultural y Natural, ros. Конвенция об охране всемирного культурного и природного наследия) – umowa międzynarodowa zobowiązująca państwa sygnatariuszy do identyfikacji, ochrony, konserwacji, rewaloryzacji i przekazania przyszłym pokoleniom dziedzictwa kulturowego i naturalnego. Ustanawia ochronę dziedzictwa kulturowego i przyrodniczego o wyjątkowej powszechnej wartości, m.in. przez nadawanie międzynarodowego statusu ochrony i poprzez wpisanie na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO. Uchwalona przez UNESCO podczas 17. sesji w Paryżu 16 listopada 1972, weszła w życie z dniem 17 grudnia 1975. Do sierpnia 2016 Konwencję przyjęły lub ratyfikowały 192 państwa, w tym Polska, która ratyfikowała Konwencję – jako jedno z pierwszych państw – 6 maja 1976. (pl)
