- William Gadsby (1773–1844) was an English Baptist pastor. In addition to pastoring, Gadsby planted churches, and was an early leader of the Strict and Particular Baptist movement in England. Although he was not formally educated, Gadsby was regarded by his contemporaries as an excellent preacher and pastor who championed the cause of social justice and opposed the established Elizabethan Church. In 1805 he became pastor of Black Lane Chapel, Strict Baptist church in Manchester, England, and held that position until he died. (en)
- William Gadsby (1773–1844) was een Brits predikant bij de Strict Baptists. Hij werd in januari 1773 geboren te Attleborough in het graafschap Warwickshire in Midden-Engeland. Op 20-jarige leeftijd komt hij tot bekering nadat hij in 1793 de baptistenpredikant ds. Aston uit Coventry ontmoette. In 1798 preekte hij voor het eerst, deze prediking trok vele toehoorders. In 1805 werd hij predikant in Manchester. Vanaf dat jaar begon hij ook met schrijven van veelal korte geschriften over actuele onderwerpen. De meeste van deze pamphlets zijn pas na zijn dood uitgegeven, met name door zijn zoon John. Vooral door zijn geschriften is Gadsby bekend geworden. Gadsby was oprichter van The Gospel Standard, het blad van de Strict Baptists in Engeland. Dit blad werd in 1835 opgericht, en het verschijnt nog iedere maand. Veel van de preken van William Gadsby zijn in het Nederlands vertaald. In 1844 stierf Gadsby op 71-jarige leeftijd. Gadsby staat bij de Engelse Strict Baptists in hoog aanzien als een van de ‘founding fathers’ van deze groepering. (nl)
