Readdy erhielt 1974 einen Bachelor in Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik von der United States Naval Academy. Bei der United States Navy wurde Readdy zum Marineflieger ausgebildet. Von 1976 bis 1980 war er auf dem Flugzeugträger USS Forrestal im Mittelmeer und im Nordatlantik stationiert. 1980 wurde er zum Testpiloten ausgebildet und als Testpilot und Ausbilder für Testpiloten bis 1984 eingesetzt. Anschließend wurde er auf die USS Coral Sea für Einsätze im Mittelmeer und der Karibik versetzt. (de)

- William Francis Readdy is a former Associate Administrator of the Office of Space Flight, at NASA Headquarters. He was born January 24, 1952, in Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and is married to Colleen Nevius. They have two sons and a daughter. He graduated from McLean High School, McLean, Virginia, in 1970 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering (with honors) from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1974. He's a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School 1980. Readdy is a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, the Explorers Club, and the and is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA. He also belongs to the Association of Space Explorers. Readdy currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education as Treasurer. Readdy is also currently a member of the Board of Directors of Astrobotic Technology, a Carnegie Mellon University spinoff company that is competing for the Google Lunar X Prize. (en)

Readdy zijn eerste ruimtevlucht was STS-42 met de spaceshuttle Discovery en vond plaats op 22 januari 1992. Tijdens de missie werd er onderzoek gedaan in de International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-1), een aangepaste Spacelab module. Readdy maakte deel uit van NASA Astronaut Group 12. Deze groep van 15 astronauten begon hun training in juni 1987 en werden in augustus 1988 astronaut. In totaal heeft Readdy drie ruimtevluchten op zijn naam staan. - William Francis Readdy (Quonset Point, 24 de janeiro de 1952} é um ex-astronauta norte-americano e ex-administrador associado do Departamento de Voos Espaciais da NASA. Um veterano com três viagens ao espaço a bordo dos ônibus espaciais, tem um total de 672 horas em órbita. Formado em engenharia aeroespacial pela Academia Naval dos Estados Unidos, em Annapolis, e como piloto de testes pela Escola de Piloto de Teste Naval dos Estados Unidos, serviu no Atlântico Norte e no Mediterrâneo como piloto de jatos de combate no porta-aviões USS Forrestal entre 1976 e 1980. Depois de formado como piloto de teste instrutor, atividade que exerceu entre 1980 e 1984, foi novamente designado para serviço em porta-aviões, desta vez no USS Coral Sea. Em 1986, foi transferido para a reserva da Marinha como capitão, quando passou a trabalhar na NASA e como reservista passou a servir como piloto instrutor e comandante de unidade até sua aposentadoria da força naval em 2000. Ao encerrar sua carreira de aviador naval, tinha mais de sete mil horas de voos em dezenas de tipos de aviões e helicópteros e 550 aterrissagens registradas em porta-aviões. (pt)
