- William Edmondstoune Aytoun FRSE (21 June 1813 – 4 August 1865) was a Scottish poet, lawyer by training, and professor of rhetoric and belles lettres at the University of Edinburgh. He published poetry, translation, prose fiction, criticism and satire and was a lifelong contributor to the Edinburgh literary periodical Blackwood's Magazine. He was also a collector of Scottish ballads. In the early 1850s, Professor Aytoun lent his name as a supporter of the fledgling National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights. His distinctive legacy as a teacher has led to him being called the 'first modern professor of English Literature'. (en)

Nato al nr. 21 di Abercromby Place a Edimburgo, fu il figlio unico di Joan Keith (m. 1861) e Roger Aytoun (m. 1843), avvocato, e parente di Sir Robert Aytoun. A sua madre, donna di cultura, doveva la sua passione per la letteratura (tra cui le ballate liriche), le sue simpatie politiche verso il Partito Tory e la sua ammirazione per la Casa reale degli Stuart. W 1863 roku rozpoczął współpracę z pismem „Blackwood's Magazine”, która trwała do końca jego życia. Tam właśnie zamieścił większość ze swych humorystycznych utworów prozatorskich, m.in. The Glenmutchkin Railway, How I Became a Yeoman i How I Stood for the Dreepdaily Burghs. W tym samym czasopiśmie opublikowano jego główne dzieło poetyckie, Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers, oraz częściowo autobiograficzną powieść, Norman Sinclair. Inne napisane przez Aytouna utwory to The Bon Gaultier Ballads (wspólnie z Theodorem Martinem) i Firmilian, a Spasmodic Tragedy, wydane pod pseudonimem T. Percy Jones.
