La isla fue creada en el siglo XVIII como fortificación por el conde Federico Guillermo de Schaumburg-Lippe y regente del principado de Schaumburg-Lippe, pequeño estado germánico ya desaparecido.Desde entonces y hasta la actualidad, la isla alberga el Festung Wilhelmstein (la fortaleza Wilhelmstein). La isla, cercana al municipio de Hagenburg, se ha convertido en un popular destino turístico y se puede llegar a ella en los llamados 'barcos de emigrantes' que parten desde los pueblos de Steinhude y Mardorf.
