Primarily a starting pitcher, Ferrell played for the Cleveland Indians (1927–33), Boston Red Sox (1934–37), Washington Senators (1937–38), New York Yankees (1938–39), Brooklyn Dodgers (1940) and Boston Braves (1941). Inoltre è il l'unica giocatore dal 1900 ad aver realizzato 20 vittorie nelle sue prime quattro stagioni complete della MLB. Anche due dei suoi fratelli maggiori furono giocatori di baseball professionisti; Rick, che fu un giocatore nella MLB dal 1929 al 1947 e venne introdotto nella Baseball Hall of Fame nel 1984 e George, che fu veterano nella minor league, in cui giocò per 18 stagioni.
