It is located 35 km east of Stuttgart, and 15 km northwest of Schwäbisch Gmünd.Welzheim has 11,239 (2005) inhabitants and is located in the 'Welzheimer Wald', a forest in the north-east of Württemberg. The district of Welzheim and its surrounding villages are mainly rural and agricultural. Because of the big forest areas, the timber industry remains a big part of local business. There are many beautiful natural areas near Welzheim, including the lake 'Ebnisee' and a hiking trail 'Mühlenwanderweg' (mill hiking trail), which follows many mills located in the 'Welzheimer Wald'. In the town itself, there are sights such as the St. Gallus Church and the town hall. (en)

A história do assentamento após a queda do Império Romano está no escuro, até o ano de 1266, quando Welzheim recebeu os direitos da cidade.Em 1499, a igreja de São Galo foi consagrada, presumivelmente como uma nova paróquia.Em 5 de setembro de 1726, um incêndio destruiu toda a cidade. A igreja foi incendiada até suas fundações, embora logo tenha sido reconstruída. A prefeitura foi reconstruída em 1731.O distrito de Welzheim tornou-se parte do condado de Waiblingen em 1938 e é um reitor da Igreja Evangélica-Luterana de Württemberg desde 1977.Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, houve um pequeno campo de concentração perto da cidade, hoje identificado eufemisticamente como simplesmente "A Prisão".
