- Waragi ([waragi], auch [waradʒi]) ist ein ginähnliches Getränk, das sich in Uganda großen Zuspruchs erfreut. Der Name entstand aus der Bezeichnung „war gin“ (deutsch: Kriegsgin). Diese Bezeichnung wurde in den 1950ern und 1960ern von den in Uganda lebenden Briten – Uganda war bis zur Unabhängigkeit 1962 britisches Protektorat – für den im Lande gebrannten Schnaps verwendet.Auf Luganda hieß das Getränk enguli, und das Enguli-Gesetz (The Enguli Act) regelte 1965, dass diese Spirituosen nur noch unter staatlicher Lizenz destilliert werden durften, was allerdings weitestgehend missachtet wurde. Ein Überbleibsel aus dieser Zeit ist die heute meistkonsumierte Waragi-Marke Uganda Waragi, die damals von einem Staatsbetrieb abgefüllt wurde und heute von East African Breweries Limited produziert wird. Der Uganda Waragi (auch als UG oder Spirit of Uganda bezeichnet) wird aus Hirse hergestellt. Weitere populäre Waragi-Marken, zum Teil von kleinen Brennereien hergestellt, sind Lira Lira (aus Maniokmehl und Rohrzucker) und Kasese (benannt nach der gleichnamigen Stadt), der aus grünen Kochbananen (auf Luganda: matoke) hergestellt wird. - Waragi (pronounced [ˈwaɾaɡi], also known as kasese) is a generic term in Uganda for domestic distilled beverages. Waragi is also given different names, depending on region of origin, the distillation process, or both. Waragi is known as a form of homemade Gin. The term "Waragi" is synonymous with locally distilled gin in all parts of Uganda. However, Uganda Waragi is a particular brand of industrially distilled gin produced by East African Breweries Limited. Other brands of distilled gin which are done by individuals at small scale are also available, but they are also unique and different from each other. The most common are: 1. "Kasese-Kasese" which was originally distilled in the district of Kasese in western Uganda and sold all over the country; 2. "Lira-Lira" which first originated in Lira district in northern Uganda and sold all over the country as well. These two brands "waragi" have different tastes and scents from each other. The distillation process in both cases produce highly distilled gin at the level produced industrially. Moonshining and consumption of waragi and other alcoholic beverages is widespread in Uganda. In the 2004 WHO , Uganda ranked as the world's leading consumer of alcohol (per capita). Based on results from 2007, Uganda’s overall alcohol consumption was an average of 17.6 liters per capita. This is unusually high compared to surrounding countries. In 2016 this seems no longer the case, with total consumption of pure alcohol down to 9.5 litres per capita (≥ 15 years of age). (en)

XX wieku, kiedy to Brytyjczycy zaobserwowali, że najemni żołnierze pochodzący z Sudanu piją alkohol przed akcjami bojowymi. Od używanego przez nich określenia war gin powstało słowo waragi. Waragi jest wytwarzane w różnych częściach Ugandy zazwyczaj w warunkach domowych z bananów, manioku, prosa lub trzciny cukrowej. Uganda Waragi jest także marką alkoholu wytwarzanego i sprzedawanego przez spółkę Uganda Breweries, należącą do East African Breweries. Domowy i niekontrolowany wyrób i obrót alkoholem jest istotnym problemem społecznym w Ugandzie. Szacuje się, że niekontrolowane waragi stanowi ok. 80% alkoholu dostępnego w tym kraju. Roczne spożycie alkoholu w Ugandzie wynosi ok. 19,5 litra na dorosłego mieszkańca. Sprzedaż taniego alkoholu w saszetkach o pojemności o 100 ml powoduje, że jest on powszechnie dostępny również dla dzieci. Zróżnicowana jakość waragi powoduje, że często dochodzi do zatruć, w tym śmiertelnych. W kwietniu 2010 doszło do tragicznego wypadku. W ok. 80 osób zmarło po spożyciu waragi zanieczyszczonego metanolem. (pl)
