Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea is a 1964–1968 American science fiction television series based on the 1961 film of the same name. Both were created by Irwin Allen, which enabled the film's sets, costumes, props, special effects models, and sometimes footage, to be used in the production of the television series. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was the first of Irwin Allen's four science fiction television series (the three others being Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants), and the longest-running. Die Hauptrolle spielt dabei das Atom-U-Boot Seaview, welches nach außen ein Forschungs-U-Boot darstellt, in Wirklichkeit aber ein HighTech-Kampf-U-Boot ist. Unter dem Kommando von Admiral Harriman Nelson und Captain Lee Crane kämpft die Mannschaft der Seaview u. a. gegen größenwahnsinnige Wissenschaftler, außerirdische Invasoren und Seemonster. In Deutschland lief die Serie unter dem Namen Die Seaview – In geheimer Mission zum ersten Mal am 17. Dezember 1994 auf ProSieben. Die Serie lief im amerikanischen Fernsehen vom 14. September 1964 bis zum 15. September 1968. Es wurden insgesamt 110 Folgen in 4 Staffeln gedreht. Erfinder und Produzent der Serie war Irwin Allen. Die Serie stellt eine Mischung zwischen Spionage und Science Fiction dar. Die Serie setzt den Kinofilm Unternehmen Feuergürtel mit Walter Pidgeon, Robert Sterling und Peter Lorre aus dem Jahr 1961 fort. Die Serie entstand in etwa zur gleichen Zeit wie Star Trek und beinhaltet viele ähnliche Elemente mit dem Unterschied, dass die Serie im Meer spielt. A série contava as venturas e desventuras do submarino Seaview em suas missões. No primeiro ano, os episódios foram filmados em preto e branco. Nessa primeira temporada, o tema quase sempre foi a Guerra Fria, sendo os inimigos recorrentes os comunistas, normalmente de países fictícios mas que nos remetiam, quase sempre, aos soviéticos e os cubanos. Com os episódios coloridos, os alienígenas e outros seres fantásticos (lobisomens, bonecos e brinquedos mortais) passaram a trazer problemas para os tripulantes.O submarino tinha uma visão panorâmica do fundo do mar, encontrando mistérios que ameaçavam a vida dos tripulantes. A partir da terceira temporada, foi incorporado à série um pequeno submarino com capacidade de voar que marcou presença em vários episódios. Ele era chamado de "Sub-Voador" (Flying Sub em inglês). Entre os vários tripulantes, havia um marinheiro de ascendência polonesa chamado Kowalski, que frequentemente era escolhido pelo seu superior imediato (Chef Shark) para ser o "voluntário" em todas as missões externas ao submarino que envolviam grande risco de morte. O intérprete de Kowalski, o ator Del Monroe, foi o único integralmente da série que esteve no elenco do longa metragem de 1961.
