- Trieste Contemporanea is a cultural centre based in Trieste (Italy). Founded as a committee in 1995, it carries out a prevalent research activity into the field of Central Eastern European contemporary visual arts. The Centre dedicates to the artistic and curatorial practices of this European area exhibitions, events, conferences and workshops, editorial productions, international special projects and some recurring initiatives including the CEI Venice Forum for Contemporary Art Curators (since 2003, a co-production with the Central European Initiative), the Trieste Contemporanea International Design Competition (founded in 1995 by Gillo Dorfles), the Young European Artist Award (since 1999, for artists under 30, active in the fields of theatre, visual arts and information technology). The Trieste Contemporanea library (specialized in European art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and dedicated to Franco Jesurun) is part of the Italian National Library Service.The centre has recently been recognised by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage (MiBACT) as a luogo del contemporaneo (Italian contemporary art venue). Fondato come comitato nel 1995, svolge una prevalente attività di ricerca nel campo delle arti visive contemporanee dell’Europa centro orientale. Il centro dedica alle pratiche artistiche e curatoriali di quest’area europea mostre, eventi, convegni e workshop, produzioni editoriali, progetti speciali internazionali e alcune iniziative ricorrenti tra le quali il CEI Venice Forum for Contemporary Art Curators (dal 2003, una co-produzione con CEI-Iniziativa Centro Europea), il Concorso Internazionale di Design Trieste Contemporanea (fondato nel 1995 da Gillo Dorfles), il Premio Giovane Emergente Europeo (dal 1999, per artisti dell’Europa dell’Est under 30) e il concorso Squeeze it (dal 2014, per artisti europei under 30 attivi nei campi del teatro, delle arti visive e delle tecnologie dell’informazione). La Biblioteca di Trieste Contemporanea (specializzata in arte europea dei secoli XX e XXI e dedicata a Franco Jesurun) fa parte del Sistema Bibliotecario Nazionale tramite il Polo dell’Università di Trieste.
