- Eric von Hippel (* 27. August 1941) ist ein US-amerikanischer Ökonom und seit 1973 Professor an der MIT Sloan School of Management mit Spezialisierung auf die Eigenschaften und Mechanismen verteilter und offener Innovation. Er ist vor allem für seine Arbeiten zu „Nutzerinnovationen“ („user innovation“) bekannt – Innovationen, die von Nutzern und nicht von Produzenten der betrachteten Produkte ausgehen. Nutzerinnovatoren können sowohl Individuen als auch Unternehmen sein. Von Hippel und Koautoren zeigten, dass in manchen Branchen ein Großteil der Innovationen, vor allem radikaler Innovationen, von Nutzern ausgehen. Eine wichtige Rolle spielen dabei „lead user“, die früher als das Gros des Marktes Bedarf an einer bestimmten Innovation haben und zudem erwarten, in besonderem Maße von einer Befriedigung dieses Bedarfs zu profitieren. Die Arbeiten Eric von Hippels finden Anwendung im Innovationsmanagement und im Management von Open-Source-Software. Er ist Autor zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Artikel und der Bücher „The Sources of Innovation” (1988), „Democratizing Innovation“ (2005) und „Free Innovation“ (2017). Von Hippel wurden die Ehrendoktorwürden vierer Universitäten verliehen. Er wurde ausgezeichnet mit dem EU Innovation Luminary Award (2015), dem Schumpeter School Prize (2017) und der Portugal Medal of Science (2020). Von Hippel ist Beiratsmitglied von Patient Innovation ( https://patient-innovation.com ), einer gemeinnützigen internationalen Plattform, auf der sich Patienten und Pflegende über Innovationsideen zu Therapien und Hilfsmitteln austauschen. Eric von Hippel ist der Doktorvater von Frank Spitel, Terje Buer, Dietmar Harhoff, Stefan Thomke, Karim Lakhani, Sonali Shah, Susumu Ogawa und Benjamin Mako Hill. Eric von Hippel ist der Sohn von Dagmar von Hippel, geb. Franck, und des Materialwissenschaftlers und Physikers Arthur Robert von Hippel, der ebenfalls Professor am MIT war. In order to describe this phenomenon, in 1986 he introduced the term lead user. Hippel's work has applications in business strategy and free/open source software (FOSS), and he is one of the most highly cited social scientists writing on FOSS. The BUGvonHippel, named for Eric von Hippel and bearing his name in Braille, is a breakout board module and an example of open-source hardware. Eric von Hippel is the son of the material scientist and physicist Arthur Robert von Hippel, who was also a professor at MIT. His great uncle is the German ophthalmologist Eugen von Hippel. von Hippel has been awarded the EU Innovation Luminary Award (2015), the Schumpeter School Prize (2017), and the Portugal Medal of Science (2020).
