Er lehrt gegenwärtig (Stand Nov. 2012) an der Georgetown University und hat einen Forschungsauftrag am . Ihm wird eine führende Rolle in der Ausarbeitung des (1978) zugeschrieben. In der Folge schrieb er mit James Childress die (1979) – das auf Prinzipienethik beruhende Vier-Prinzipien-Modell – und schuf so eine der ersten Monographien auf diesem sich entwickelnden Forschungsfeld. Die Arbeit wurde später vielfach übersetzt und neu aufgelegt. Er ist Mitherausgeber des Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, der und der Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews. Er studierte zunächst Philosophie an der Southern Methodist University, wo er 1963 mit einem M.A. abschloss. Beauchamp authored or co-authored several books on ethics and on Hume, including Hume and the Problem of Causation (1981, with Alexander Rosenberg), Principles of Biomedical Ethics (1985, with James F. Childress), and The Human Use of Animals (1998, with F. Barbara Orlans et al). He is the co-editor with R. G. Frey of The Oxford Handbook of Animal Ethics (2011).
