- Thread és un protocol de comunicacions sense cables via ràdio-freqüència (xarxa sense fil). Està dirigit al sector domèstic (domòtica), edificis terciaris (immòtica) i a ciutats (urbòtica: xarxa d'àrea metropolitana). Thread està basat en la norma IEEE 802.15.4 i 6LoWPAN (que implementa IPv6), destinat a crear xarxes d'àrea personal de baixa potència i baixa velocitat de transmissió de dades. Die Protokollspezifikation ist kostenlos erhältlich, erfordert jedoch die Zustimmung zu und die Einhaltung einer EULA. Im Juli 2014 wurde die Arbeitsgruppe „Thread Group“ gegründet, u. a. von Google Nest, Osram und Samsung. Seit August 2018 ist Apple Teil der Initiative. Thread verwendet 6LoWPAN, welches das IEEE 802.15.4-Protokoll verwendet, und ist IP-adressierbar, bietet Cloud-Zugriff und AES-Verschlüsselung. Eine BSD-lizenzierte Open-Source-Implementierung von Thread („OpenThread“) wurde von Google Nest veröffentlicht. Thread muss keine Anwendungsschicht verwalten, kann aber Anwendungsebenen unterstützen, wenn diese eine geringe Bandbreite beanspruchen und über IPv6 betrieben werden. Thread soll vermeiden, dass ein einzelner Ausfallpunkt („Single Point of Failure“) das gesamte System ausfallen lässt. Sofern das Netzwerk mit mehr als einem Router betrieben wird, kann ein anderer Router die Rolle des ausgefallenen übernehmen. - Thread is an IPv6-based, low-power mesh networking technology for Internet of things (IoT) products. Thread is reliable, secure and delivers fast response times, extended coverage and years of battery life to elevate smart home and building experiences. The Thread protocol specification is available at no cost; however, this requires agreement and continued adherence to an End-User License Agreement (EULA), which states that "Membership in Thread Group is necessary to implement, practice, and ship Thread technology and Thread Group specifications." Thread uses 6LoWPAN, which, in turn, uses the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless protocol with mesh communication (on the 2.4 GHz spectrum), as does Zigbee and other systems. However, Thread is IP-addressable, with cloud access and AES encryption. A BSD-licensed open-source implementation of Thread, called "OpenThread", is available from and managed by Google. In 2019, the Connected Home over IP project (later renamed "Matter"), led by Zigbee Alliance (now Connectivity Standards Alliance), Google, Amazon, and Apple, announced a broad collaboration to create a royalty-free standard and open-source code base to promote interoperability in home connectivity, leveraging Thread, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth Low Energy.
