- Ο Τέλλος ήταν πολίτης της Αρχαίας Αθήνας που υπήρξε κατά τον Σόλωνα «ο πιο ευτυχισμένος θνητός». Συγκεκριμένα, όταν ο Κροίσος, βασιλιάς της Λυδίας, επιδεικνύοντας τα πλούτη του στον Σόλωνα, τον ρώτησε αν γνώριζε άλλο θνητό πιο ευτυχισμένο, εκείνος του απάντησε με τη γνωστή φράση «Μηδένα προ του τέλους μακάριζε» (= μη μακαρίζεις κανένα, πριν τον θάνατό του) και του ανέφερε ως παράδειγμα τον συμπατριώτη του Τέλλο. Ο Τέλλος, είπε ο Σόλων, έζησε ευδαίμων σε όλη τη ζωή του, έχοντας κοντά του όλα τα παιδιά του παντρεμένα και ευτυχισμένα, και απεβίωσε στο «πεδίο της τιμής», μαχόμενος εναντίον των εχθρών της πατρίδας του. - Tellos d'Athènes est un personnage de la Grèce antique évoqué par Hérodote. Dans son Œuvre, Hérodote raconte le dialogue d'un sage d'Athènes, Solon, avec l'énarque Crésus, roi de Lydie. - Tellus (Greek: Τέλλος) was an Athenian statesman featured in Herodotus's Histories, in which the wise man Solon describes him as the happiest man ever. To quote Herodotus: Tellus... had both beautiful and good children, and he saw all his grandchildren from birth and all remaining alive... And the end of his life was most brilliant: for when the Athenians had a war against their neighbours in Eleusis, coming to the rescue and making a rout of the enemy he died most beautifully, and the Athenians had buried him publicly right where he fell, and honoured him greatly. His "perfect" life helps historians infer Ancient Greek ideals about the most honorable and mentionable way to live. After describing Tellus as the happiest of all men, Solon states that the second-happiest men ever were the brothers Kleobis and Biton. (en)

In verbazing over dit woord vroeg Croesus haastig: "Waarom dan acht gij Tellus de gelukkigste?" En deze zei: "Tellus kreeg vooreerst, bij de bloei van zijn stad, brave en dappere kinderen, en uit hen allen zag hij kinderen geboren worden, en die allen in het leven blijven, en ten tweede viel hem, nadat hij in welvaart had geleefd, naar onze mening, het schitterendste eind van het leven ten deel; want toen de Atheners met hun naburen bij Eleusis in strijd waren geraakt, kwam hij te hulp, en hij dreef de vijanden op de vlucht en stierf op het schoonst, en hem begroeven de Atheners van staatswege, waar hij gevallen was, en eerden hem op grootse wijze."
